THE DISCOURSE ON THE DISCREPANCY BETWEEN INHERENT AND LEARNED HUMAN COGNITIVE ABILITIES ACTS AS A STIMULANT FOR THE PERCEPTION OF ART IN THIS ENVIRONMENT

VARYING TEXT SEGMENTS ARE PROJECTED FROM THESE INSTITUTIONS INTO THE CITY'S PUBLIC SPACE. A GRAPHICALLY STYLISED, SEMI-TRANSPARENT DEPICTION OF THE ALPHABET ON THE GLASS LIFT TOWER DISRUPTS THE VIEW OF THE CITYSCAPE THROUGH THE GLASS FAÇADE AS THE LIFT MOVES UP AND DOWN

PAVILION UPPER AUSTRIAN HORTICULTURAL SHOW, 2007

 

A SYMPOSIUM ON ART IN PUBLIC SPACES WAS HELD DURING THE UPPER AUSTRIAN HORTICULTURAL SHOW. NINE ARTISTS WERE INVITED TO DEVELOP SITE-SPECIFIC ART PROJECTS FOR THE SHOW AREA, SPILLING OVER INTO THE URBAN SPACE, TO CAPTURE THE FUNCTIONS AND SOCIAL UTILIZATION OF A SPECIFIC LOCATION.
THE PAVILION REPRESENTS A CONFINED NEGATIVE SPACE IN CONTRADISTINCTION TO THE VISUAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE HORTICULTURAL SHOW, DEPRIVING THE VISITORS OF A VIEW OF THIS ENVIRONMENT. THUS PERCEPTION IS REDIRECTED, THE SKY AND CLOUDS AS INTANGIBLE, EPHEMERAL ELEMENTS COME INTO FOCUS, MERGING WITH THE NON-REPRESENTATIONAL ART ON THE WALLS OF THIS SPACE

THE BOW-SHAPED ARRANGEMENT OF SMALL MIRRORED METAL PLATES REFLECTS THE LIGHT AND COLOUR OF PASSING TRAFFIC INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING. IN THIS WAY THE STATIC OBJECT AWAKENS THE IMPRESSION OF FLOWING MOVEMENT

THE EXHIBITION SPACE IS TRANSFORMED INTO A COLOUR SPACE BY MEANS OF PAINTED LUCITE PANELS IN THE WINDOW REVEALS. THIS MINIMALIST INTERFERENCE CAUSES A SHIFT IN PERCEPTION OF THIS WHITE-CUBE ROOM TO EVOKE IN THE VISITORS ALTERED STATES OF SENSITIVITY (DOMESTIC HAPPINESS, ROMANCE, EMOTIONAL SECURITY)
